Le Freak - Music Inspired by Chic compiled by Joey Negro
by Various Artists
Arguably, Dave Lee aka Joey Negro and his Z Records label are the contemporary go-to Disco label. And it was only a matter of time before Mr Lee would delve deep into his vinyl mancave and pull a selection of sound-alike tracks inspired by that late 70s Chic sound.
To date, Chic and their productions have notched-up sales of over 100,000,000, so with that in mind, it comes as no surprise that their music has inspired others to pick up the bass & lead guitar and emulate that groovy sound... and that 's exactly what this album is all about. So here we have it - 'Le Freak Music Inspired by Chic - Complied by Joey Negro'. Fourteen glorious Chic inspired cuts that groove like a Disco train fuelled on 70s Space Dust (remember that stuff kids?)
The 'Le Freak' journey starts with Ann Margret's 'Everybody Needs Somebody', a track truly laden with "that sound" as it's huge string & horn arrangements pay an almost copy-cat like homage to the Edwards & Rodgers sound. And staying on that theme, Delegation's 'Heartache No. 9' and Van Jones' 'Not About That (Show Me Some Respect)' both deliver killer grooves whilst characteristically panning the strat firmly to the left! No sound-alike album would be complete without a cover version, and Charanga 76's 'Good Times (Como Vamos A Gozar)' definitely hits the spot: A Latin Disco-style rework that oozes plenty of cowbell fun-on-the-floor good times, and a flute solo to die for.
Slowing the bpm down we have the rather enigmatic 'Don't Sneak On Me' by the Michael Zager Band featuring Luther Vandross, a track that's soaring backing vocals carry like it was, well, 1979 of course, and the same can definitely be said for Change's 'Heaven of My Life' too. Next-up we have Odyssey's 'Together', the only track on the album that IS produced by Edwards & Rodgers, and one that we thought was well-worth including, for it's obscurity and super slick 80s production values. Moving forward and we hit the contemporary clock, as Ultra Nate's 'New Kind of Medicine' and Joey Negro & The Sunburst Band's 'The Secret Life of Us' both hit the warm compression button, proving that the Disco sound can be perfectly emulated, even when being produced through one of those new-fangled computer devices!
Well, we think you'll agree that Joey Negro has done a sterling job in compiling an album of music inspired by Chic, and one that perfectly captures... "that sound!"
